Management master programme
The part-time Management master degree programme prepares you for the next step in your career, be it on the domestic or international stage.
It also enables you to assume additional responsibility: the programme takes an interdisciplinary approach, combining assessment of companies’ internal and external features with innovation and aspects of sustainable management. A choice of five electives gives you the freedom to tailor the degree in line with your requirements.
The degree programme: Master of Arts in Business (MA)
This part-time programme gives you a clear overview of the process landscapes of companies and organisations. It aims to enable you to plan, implement and manage processes in the long run, based on the process landscape.
What subject do you want to concentrate on – human resources (HR)? Management control? Setting up and taking over small and medium-sized enterprises? Big data and digitalisation in health care? Or perhaps management and organisation in the health sector? This programme allows you to adapt your focus areas to your personal needs.
For example, you can choose the HR elective in semester 2 and address a topic related to management control in your master thesis in the fourth semester. This gives you broader-based skills that you can use in various sectors.
The Systematic Leadership and Corporate Communication course in semester 4 brings together subjects covered in the preceding semesters. The final semester is centred on the master thesis, for which you also receive research coaching.
Tip
In semester 4, most of the time you spend in Krems will be devoted to block courses. This means you can take the next step up the career ladder or alternatively spend time at one of our partner universities abroad. A double degree at the University of Applied Sciences Deggendorf is a particularly attractive option.
The Management master programme gives you the tools you need to take on mid-level managerial responsibilities in various sectors. We aim to enhance your skills and show you what it means to manage a company and employees profitably, and with a strong sense of responsibility. Because what we need most of all in life is someone who spurs us on to achieve the things that we’re capable of.
Programme director Martin Waiguny
Electives
Choose your own focus areas. You select one of five electives on the degree programme. You attend electives in the second semester together with students from the Management master programme.
Big Data & Digitalization in Health Care
The health sector can also benefit from the widening range of possibilities opened up by digitalisation. A number of trends can already be identified that could be truly revolutionary: the data available and creating links between them will pave the way for groundbreaking innovations that affect the entire sector. More effective forms of therapy will lead to a rethink of healthcare providers’ processes. Indeed, this is the only means of ensuring the responsible use of resources in future.
One thing is certain: you don’t necessarily need programming skills to devote your career to pushing forward the digital transformation of the health service. If you want to use your managerial abilities in order to prepare health-sector companies for the digital future, this is the right elective for you.
The course is taught entirely in English and provides an extensive overview of the trends shaping digitalisation in the health sector. This academic analysis also takes into account the risks associated with new technologies.
Management and Organisation in the Health Sector
The health service is shaped by the interdisciplinary and interprofessional nature of its stakeholders: various medical specialisms; different occupational groups, usually working in extremely hierarchical organisations; the availability of new and ever-broader scientific findings; as well as patients and their relatives, who play the role of clients. Managers need to be particularly well prepared to work in such an environment.
The Management and Organisation in the Health Sector elective helps you to develop the tools you will need to work as a manager at a health-sector company or organisation. You will know how to deal with difficult and emotional situations, while also safeguarding your personal well-being.
You will also have a strong grasp of processes at health sector organisations and play your part in developing long-term business models that generate benefits for clients – patients, their relatives, as well as parents and legal guardians. As a skilled manager you will be in a position to face up to the challenges that will emerge in the health sector in the future.
Controlling
Do you have a passion for numbers? Then this elective will probably be your first choice. As a controller, you are partly responsible for managing a company. You set targets and check whether they are met, manage payment flows and liquidity, and plan and evaluate business processes using integrated, IT-based planning systems.
Your work has a direct impact on strategic and operational management at your company. You also support other departments – such as HR, sales and supply chain management – with decentralised controlling tasks.
This elective shows you how to prepare and present information in line with the intended purpose, which in turn simplifies strategic and operational decision-making. In order to ensure that you are well prepared to take on these vital responsibilities, you will focus on sensitive topics such as conflicting targets and planning conflicts. You will also learn to assess what key performance indicators are less meaningful for businesses and how to avoid misinterpretation.
Setting Up and Taking Over Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises
Do you have a high-potential idea and would you like to set up your own business? Or are you preparing to take over the running of a company, maybe a family business? Then this elective is the ideal choice for you.
You gain a detailed overview of various business models and find out how to prepare a new model or build on an existing one. There is a special focus on goal orientation and innovation. The elective puts growth concepts and growth strategies under the microscope. Success factors and risk management are also important considerations.
Another important topic is importing and exporting – in today’s globalised world, you are almost certain to be involved in international trade. The Intercultural Competence course also looks at this aspect.
Human Resource Management
Do you see your HR department as a business partner? This elective gives you the skills needed to assume important responsibilities and a wide range of tasks associated with operational and strategic HR management.
You'll look at various questions, such as how to derive an HR strategy from a company’s strategic objectives, the links between remuneration and incentives, and ways in which you can find staff and retain them in the long term by means of your HR strategy.
Employer branding, talent management, recruitment and onboarding feature widely in the different courses. You will discuss risks and opportunities connected with inclusion, and become familiar with contemporary diversity management tools. There is also an analysis of Austria’s labour law framework, which forms the basis of HR work.
Career options for graduates of the Management master programme
As a graduate of the Management master programme, you have the choice of pursuing a career in general management or becoming an expert, for instance in controlling or HR management. The Setting Up and Taking Over Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises elective is the ideal preparation for starting your own company or taking control of an existing one.
The part-time degree opens up new career options in middle or senior management, because you are ideally placed to embark on a career at home or abroad.
