The degree programme: Bachelor of Arts in Business (BA)

After completing the Business Administration for the Public Health Sector bachelor degree programme, you will be ready to assume professional responsibilities in the healthcare sector.

The course will provide you with a solid foundation in business administration and economics. In-depth examination of health sector organisations puts you in a position to successfully apply this knowledge in specific professional contexts.

During the programme, you will also develop your capacity for joined-up thinking and arriving at decisions which take into account the ethical considerations.

There is a strong practical focus throughout the degree – case studies, projects with healthcare companies, and lecturers with a background in the industry are all part and parcel of the programme.

Business administration

Business administration focuses on how organisations and companies are managed. In other words, it examines business processes with the aim of providing insights into the planning, implementation and evaluation of responsibility, approaches and objectives in different parts of a business.

Business administration topics include: accounting and finance, marketing, human resources and logistics.

The healthcare sector is a growing market and is set to carry on expanding in the coming decades. Demographic change and advances in medicine, pharmaceuticals and medical technology are increasingly important factors for the economy.

Health economics

Health economics looks at the fundamentals of management from a healthcare perspective.

Your health economics know-how will help you stand out from the competition when applying for jobs. Clearly, sustainable growth in the healthcare sector will only be possible if there are enough highly qualified managers with the right expertise.

Healthcare organisations

Key healthcare organisations include hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, insurers and care facilities, as well as home care providers and rehabilitation centres.
In addition to these core areas, your knowledge of health economics will also be applicable to related fields such as wellness, health tourism and assisted living.

Full-time or part-time – which is the right format for you?

The Business Administration for the Public Health Sector bachelor programme is offered as both a full-time and a part-time degree. Your choice of format depends on your personal situation.

Part-time programme

Opening up new perspectives

If you already have a job, you’re more likely to choose our part-time programme. The goal is to enable you to take the next step in your career or change profession after graduating.

Lectures take place on Fridays and Saturdays, so they can be easily integrated into your work schedule. There is also a block week each semester. What sets this programme apart is that you and your colleagues can analyse cases from your day-to-day work during lectures – which can lead to some interesting discussions! You can also address problems facing your company in the course of various projects and written papers.

Full-time programme

The full university experience

If you want to focus on your studies and enjoy all aspects of student life, a full-time programme is the one for you. Lectures take place from Monday to Friday. So you will be spending the majority of your time in Krems, which allows you to benefit from all the additional extras and services the university provides.

Don’t worry, the programme still has a strong practical focus, with an internship lasting several months, as well as business case studies, simulations and partnerships with companies. We’re proud to be able to give our students applied knowledge – in other words, helping them study the art of applied sciences.

Take advantage of the opportunities to enhance your international skills. English for spoken communication and work is firmly established on the curriculum. What’s more, you can opt for an exchange semester abroad at one of our 140 partner universities, or complete an internship in an international work environment.

A formula for success: theoretical knowledge + practical experience

The programme is built on three pillars.

The basics

Semesters 1-3

Acquiring sound basic knowledge is important for your future career. This is why the curriculum includes business administration, economics and law. You will also learn about information technology and enhance your social skills.

With many courses designed with the specifics of the healthcare industry and healthcare organisations in mind, you will also start to develop your health-related expertise. For instance, by learning important terminology and the fundamentals of health science and pharmaceuticals.

The internship semester

Semester 4

In semester 4 you will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills during an internship. You will spend a minimum of 22 weeks at an internship provider in the healthcare sector in Austria or abroad – the choice is yours.

Our Career Services department will pair you up with an internship coach, who will support you before, during and after your compulsory internship. They will provide you with invaluable guidance, from tips on finding the right placement, to advice on contract-related matters. During your internship, you will get an inside perspective on your chosen sector and gain valuable work experience.

Advanced courses

Semesters 5-6

In the final two semesters you will take the next step by building on the knowledge you have already acquired during your degree. Soft skills for areas such as conflict management and negotiations also form part of the curriculum at this stage.

You will learn more about ethical and public health aspects of healthcare management. There is a special focus on hospitals, health insurance providers, pharmaceutical companies, care facilities, home care providers and rehabilitation centres. Writing an academic paper – your dissertation – will also give you the opportunity to review what you’ve learned, as well as concentrate on areas in which you have a special interest.
